Basics of Alcoholism

Alcoholism is a disease that affects not only the person that drinks, but also the entire family around them. Unfortunately, the signs of alcoholism are difficult to notice until it becomes too late. Most people simply won’t admit they have a drinking problem, while others would rather hide it so that they can continue drinking. The problem with alcoholism is that it is a disease that can never be fully cured. Once the addiction has set in, then an alcoholic will crave the taste of alcohol for the rest of their life.

If you think you might have a problem of alcohol, then the first thing you need to do is to take a minute to understand the problem. Unless alcohol has really started to cause problems in your life, then the first warning sign that you have a problem is probably the guilt that comes with alcoholism. Therefore, the first thing that you are going to have to do is acknowledge that the guilt comes as a result of alcoholism. Once you have decided to tackle the guilt and the problem that caused it, then you can begin the process of treating yourself.

The next step is to quit drinking, preferably cold turkey. To help yourself quit, you might try finding something to do to occupy your time such as exercise or another extracurricular activity. Clear your house of alcohol, and encourage your friends and family to help you quit by reminding them of the decision that you’ve made and asking for their encouragement. Family support is important not only because they can keep you honest and help you avoid alcohol, but they can also provide emotional support when you are discouraged or feeling overwhelmed.

Once you have your friends and family on board, then start to examine what drove you to alcoholism in the first place. Was it a result of your lifestyle, or were you trying to fill a hole left by something else? Many alcoholics grew up with an alcoholic parent or family member, but others may have turned to alcohol during times of depression and or anxiety. Using alcohol as a coping mechanism never really solves the problem, so you’ll have to address the issue that led you down the path of alcoholism in the first place.

Your problems with alcohol could have been the result of many things, but the important thing is that you acknowledge your problem and vow to move on. You’ll probably experience added stress and anxiety when you quit drinking, but that is where your family can really pick you up. Enlist the help of everyone you can and you will be able to tackle your problems with alcoholism in no time. If you really struggle, then you might consider seeing a psychologist or someone that is used to dealing with addictive personality disorders. Sometimes, just having someone to talk to can make all the difference. Don’t let your drinking problem grow into something more serious, take the time to fix it before it ruins your life.
