I would like to see your thoughts on this. Some say that it’s a hereditary disease some say you become addicted to it like drugs. Yes it may be different for everyone but would any of you agree that alcoholism can be hereditary?

    I would say a combination.
I have a lot of family that have been alcoholics, or still are.
I have to say a disease, but people can overcome it, like an addiction.

Both. Addiction is a disease and alcoholism is an addiction. The medical community defines a disease that progressively gets worse over a period of time…..which is how someone becomes an alcoholic.

    i consider it a disease…
and yes i do believe that
    alcoholism can be hereditary.

i think its on th eindividual themselves but yes it can be inherited for sure but it is also an addiction.

  6. Irish Sean says:

The American Medical Association classifies it as a disease.
Based on family history, I can attest to the fact that is hereditary.
    It’s a terrible disease I wouldn’t wish on anyone.

  7. Meg says:

Both. I think that there are genes that predispose someone to alcohol addiction as well as other addictions. But it is their choice to try it in the first place. And it takes a lot of hard work and changes in thought patterns to beat it.

  8. Hamthugger says:

It is a little bit country and a little bit of blues. if you get it.

  9. blue says:

Alcoholism is actually a disease and an addiction, when people have parents /parent who were active alcoholics when they were growing up the chances more higher that they or one of their siblings will inherit or pass on alcoholism

  10. Mayor Adam West says:

If you belong to a cult… errr… I mean AA it is a disease.

If you are a rational thinking individual it is an addiction. A miss under stood addiction. Scientific studies by unbiased groups have shown that the majority of people classified as “alcoholics” are in all actuality over indulgers and show no real form of addiction.

Don’t get me wrong, alcoholism is real and dangerous. Over indulges is just childish behavior by adults acting as children.

    EDIT:

The AMA recognizes it a disease… but it widely debated in the community as to whether it is or not.
