How can a gene effect both the risk depression and the risk alcoholism?

The gene could increase your risk for depression. Once you have full blown depression you could self medicate with alcohol leading to alcoholism.

Disorders of Dopamine biochemistry in the brain are involved in both depression and alcoholism. Therefore, any gene that affects the dopamine system might potentially affect the risk for these “co-morbid” disorders.
