Why is it okay to be predisposed toward “being gay”, but people try to cure inherited alcoholism or violence?

Question by enigme_zagadka: Why is it okay to be predisposed toward “being gay”, but people try to cure inherited alcoholism or violence?
The argument is either “God made me this way” or “My DNA made me this way.” How can it be okay to be genetically predisposed toward same-sex attraction, but not okay to let your genes dictate what actions you take in other spheres of your life?
a short list of heritable traits and how (some people say) society accepts them:
gay – okay?
alcoholism – not okay?
violence – not okay?
gambling addiction – not okay?
Are the tendencies toward heritable but not desired traits any less “natural” than whatever might genetically incline a person to “be gay?”

All four of these things are not genetics. They are sin, and therefore not okay. This ‘I was born that way’ argument is new. and a lie from the pit of hell.

People can’t help being gay and sometimes it’s looked upon as wrong, when it shouldn’t be. Being gay doesn’t affect your health or make you treat people badly or in a different way. But stuff like alcoholism, drugs, gambling addiction – it does. It can destroy your health physically and mentally and can hurt the people around you, whilst being gay normally doesnt, unless the person who says its bad is a homophobic.

Everybody is gay and everybody is a bunch of perverse sicko’s but they hide it in their mind. Most peopleif not all have had disturbing thoughts towards the opposite sex they just choose to deny it.

The cause of a behavior is completely separate from whether or not it is considered morally or socially acceptable or normal.
I would say that alcoholism, violence and homosexuality are ALL right now in this society conisdered to be morally ambiguous, socially acceptable only to a limited degree, partially genetically determined and possibly curable/changeable.

actually i don’t think i it’s not okay to have neither one of these “i like to call them diseases” especially the gay thing ’cause god created us either men or women so we shouldn’t try to be something else ’cause for me it’s forbidden. and i think it’s just an illness ” a social disease” and in the case of someone really born half half i mean physically ,he or she must go to the doctor and have a surgery but this person must be very careful in his choise ’cause it’s ,not an easy one to make .

It comes down to harm to others.
In 2007, there were 15,387 fatalities related to drunk driving (more than 1/3 of all traffic fatalities) in the US, not always the drunk driver. If you add in the homicides in which alcohol was a factor, you are up to 23,199 deaths. In comparison, there were 14,406 deaths due to alcoholic liver disease. Businesses have failed because one employee had a gambling addiction and “borrowed” the assets, knowing they would be able to replace them after a successful weekend in Atlantic City. Violence is obvious. Behaviors that harm society are shunned. If the criterion were offend the sensibilities of some, a famous purple dinosaur would have gotten a lethal injection.

Honestly, no one here seems to know how to answer this question except novangelis. Alcoholism is NOT OKAY. It hurts your health (excessive drinking kills your liver and brain cells amongst other things), it destroys meaningful relationships and it creates problems due to poor judgment such as domestic violence, deaths due to drunk driving = NOT OKAY
Violence = hurts people so this should be a no brainer = NOT OKAY
Gambling addiction? Seriously?
Being gay on the other hand, DOES NOT HURT ANYONE. It does not ruin the gay person’s life or the lives of people around him/her. Let me repeat, gay people do not hurt others. A gay person can easily live a fully functional life.
Basically what is okay and not okay comes down to dysfunction. If it creates problems for you and people around you, it’s not okay. I hope that makes sense. Same goes for obesity. It hurts you, so not okay. Do you agree with me?

Your question presupposes that being gay is okay. Why do people need to justify their actions by saying that they are just that way? People don’t need to fall back on genetics to explain things they are not ashamed about. I guess someone is going to say it’s okay to be DNA-gay because they want an excuse to do something that, deep down, they know is not ethically right.
Oh, I guess this is a biology question. DNA-gay is not biologically right, either. Not a winning reproductive strategy, to be sure.
