Some people consider alcoholism to be drunk at least twice a month. Others considered drunk at least twice a week (students). If you have a glass of wine or beer with dinner every night its definitely not drunk – you probably Europe! :) So, no, you’re an alcoholic my standards.

I suppose because you are going without drinking alcohol sometimes for 1 -2 days at a time you would not be classed as an alcoholic. However, i would say that you do have a drinking problem. 9 drinks every other day is an awful lot to be drinking and puts you well in excess of the recommended weekly limit of units. Drinking this amount of alcohol regularly increases the risk of all sorts of diseases such as heart disease, liver cirrhosis and kidney damage.

You really need to cut down quite a lot to benefit your health.

    Good luck

You could drink 9 drinks a day and not necessarily considered an alcoholic, but you are probably at high risk of becoming one.

The primary criteria across medical and psychiatric domains are pretty clear – you’re an alcoholic if you can’t give it up, despite its negative effect on your life/body.

Withdrawal comes from physical dependence. Whether you’re physically dependent on alcohol is something you can determine for yourself by laying off alcohol for a week and seeing how your body reacts.

There’s a short questionnaire that is often used in hospitals to get an idea of whether someone is an alcoholic. It’s called the CAGE questionnaire. See if these apply to you:

    1. Do you ever feel like you should Cut down your drinking? (C)
    2. Do you ever feel Angry/Annoyed when people try to talk to you about drinking? (A)
    3. Do you ever feel Guilty as a consequence of drinking? (G)
    4. Do you ever need an Eye opener- a drink of alcohol in the morning- before you can function? (E)

You’re right that alcohol withdrawal is quite serious and it can actually kill you, because it causes seizures. Furthermore, excessive drinking over many years can eventually lead to problems like Korsakoff’s Syndrome (rarely), which basically devastates your mind.

That said, whether you’re an alcoholic or not, binge drinking as you do is really hard on your body and your liver is taking quite a beating. I would slow it down.
