Question by whiskyfussell: Is it really possible to overcome alcoholism? I’m at my wits end and still, I can’t stop, even with ulcers
I have; pancreatitis, which causes me constant pain, ulcers which also do and still I crave a drink… I can’t seem to get into a rehab without waiting for months (I live in Britain) and I don’t know if I can make it that long

It is very possible. You have to keep positive. Think how selfish you are being to the people in your life (contradicitng with last sentence?) and understand YOU HAVE TO STOP. Just don’t drink it. Pleasure yourself other ways….You shouldn’t have ANY in your house. Avoid dinner dates, liqour stores. Keep off it.
Please…..

YES… I can tell you for a fact that you CAN overcome it… AND smoking, too.
It takes PERSONAL DISCIPLINE and WILLPOWER… and if you don’t have it… then you can just keep drinking and be a slave to the liquor (or tobacco) companies.

Have you tried the Vivitrol (naltrexone) shot? try looking at their website vivitrol.com and research it…I am a recovering alcoholic and am taking the shot which is injected once a month….It doesn’t take the withdrawal symptoms but it takes away ALL cravings. It has worked WONDERS on me, and I don’t even think about alcohol…I don’t know if this will apply to you but if it does, I highly recommend it. I was drinking long islands like every night, and now I’m sober and dont ever thinkg about drinking! It really is great, but good luck to ya…..I

Vivitrol is a really good medication to assist with alcoholism. It is a narcotic antagonist, which means it binds to the opioid receptors in your brain, preventing the buzz or high you get from drinking. The main drawback to Vivitrol is that if you ever need to go to an ER for cardiac chest pain, trauma, or any other symptom that would require pain medication, you would need to inform the doctors and nurses you are taking Vivitrol, as you would need higher doses. And that can be dangerous, as all narcotic pain medications carry the risk of respiratory depression.
The health care provider you choose to receive Vivitrol therapy from (usually a psychiatrist) should have bracelets, wallet cards, and stickers to apply to your state-issued ID to inform your health care provider you are on Vivitrol.
Vivitrol is a 12-month program and has a tremendous potential for success in combating alcoholism. I have administered it several times, and most of my patients have been successful so far.
One medication that can assist with cravings is Campral. The main drawback to this medication is you have to take it 3 times a day…most patients forget that mid-day dose. Vivitrol is a once-monthly injection.
Speak with your health care provider to determine which course of treatment would be best for you.
Good luck
