Is this an alcoholism problem?

Question by bonni: Is this an alcoholism problem?
Now I know drinking to escape from reality or to relieve problems is very bad.
I also know that drinking socially (not too drunk) or drinking for the taste is okay.
What if you’re shy and use alcohol to open up and have fun at social events – to be more confident, fun to be around, and outgoing? Is this okay or bad?
Or what if you drink alone sometimes just to have a fun, relaxing night?
Isaac, maybe you don’t think it’s fun but I do. Don’t emphasize your opinions as fact. And FYI, I’m not fat. I’m really athletic and healthy.

If you always use alcohol to have more fun, how is anyone ever going to get to know the real you? Drinking alone is never a good idea. You sound like a very nice person, don’t use alcohol as a crutch.

No you are okay…How do I know? Because you are asking if it is a sign…an alcoholic would not ask….

One of the main reasons people consume alcohol (when they do it responsibly and in moderation) is for its social lubrication effects. Depending on your weight and gender, 1-3 drinks should give you that happy, ‘buzzed’ feeling, without compromising your abilities to reason and speak too much. Of course, you should never drive after drinking regardless of how you think you are feeling. But, as long as you are able to be social in everyday life without alcohol, there is nothing wrong with having a social drink or two in order to relax and enjoy yourself at events. When used in moderation, this is the main benefit of consuming alcohol. Be careful that you don’t overdo it and experience some of alcohol’s negative effects.
Drinking alone to relax is not prima facie wrong. Many people pour themselves a small drink when they come home and relax. Again, as above, moderation is key. As long as you are not dependent on alcohol, and use it merely to loosen up and relax, then that’s acceptable. However, pounding shots alone is not typically a good idea.

My husband is a sober alcoholic and he used it for social events to be more confident and also drank alone. He thought he was healthy at 170 lbs 6′3 but in reality people that drink are worse off than overweight people. Don’t fool yourself alcoholics come in all shapes, sizes, drink choice, occupations….and it doesn’t mean you are not an alcoholic because you just drink a couple glasses of wine each night!

That is the danger of alcohol. You might begin to like the person you are when you are drunk, so you keep on drinking more and more frequently until you become dependent on the alcohol.
