Methods of Dealing with Alcoholism (Part 2)
In the first part of this series, we talked about the importance of acknowledging your alcohol problem and enlisting the support of your friends and family to help you conquer it. In this next installment, we’ll talk about some other methods that you can use to help you treat the mental issues that might have caused your problem in the first place. The best way to fight any form of addiction is to remove yourself from the source of the addiction before you treat the physical problems. The next few methods should help you to do that.
Dealing with the mental aspect of alcoholism is just as important as dealing with the physical aspect of the addiction. One of the best things that you can do to help yourself deal with the root of the problem is to visit a counselor or psychologist. Many times, just having someone to talk to can make a big difference. Also, your counselor will be aware of several different techniques that can help you overcome your desire for alcohol and reduce the stress that comes as a byproduct of the cravings. They will also be able to help you understand why you turned to alcohol as a coping mechanism and might offer you some new ways to cope with any other problems in your life. They will be there week after week to make sure that you are following a program and are still mentally OK.
Some people also try meditation and hypnosis, both of which have been shown to work for some people. Meditation is a great coping mechanism on its own because it can help you deal with the stress that can lead to drinking. Meditation can also help you toughen your mind to strengthen your fight against alcohol cravings. You can find many meditation resources on the internet or at your local bookstore. If you look in your local newspaper or on Craigslist, you might even find some local meditation groups where you can learn more advanced techniques. Hypnosis is another fantastic option, and is said to actually remove the desire for alcohol completely. However, you should do plenty of research to make sure that the practitioner you chose has had good results with other clients. I wouldn’t rely solely on hypnosis either, as it can have a tendency to work for temporary periods of time.
The key thing to remember is that if you make an attempt to deal with the problem, then you will eventually find something that works. It may take a few different programs or counselors, but as long as you have the support of your friends and family then you won’t have to do it alone. For some people, treating alcoholism takes nothing more than a reminder of the damage t hat it has caused. For others, it might take a more disciplined approach. Regardless, if it takes more or less for you to overcome the problem, then so be it. There is nothing to be ashamed of so long as you make an honest effort to get rid of the addiction and heal yourself.
