Question by : Alcoholism and other drug addictions.?
Alcoholism and other drug addictions have genetic as well as environmental causes. Alcoholism and drug addiction tend to run in families. Would you recommend or consider genetic testing for addictive behaviors? If so under what conditions would you recommend testing? If not why not?

Best answer:

Answer by nicole
no i wouldnt recommend testing only because yes it can be genetic but u have to think about it this way u have your own brain and if your parents and grandparents were drug or alcoholics doesnt mean your gonna do them or your brain think you have to do them nothing in this world should ever have that much control over you no matter what the case maybe i know im wrong in a way just as im right but its just my opinion and its a really good question too

Question by Hunny Bunny: “Internet Addictions” – A Real Medical Menace?” What do you think?
“Alcohol, drugs, food, sex, and even shopping are all candidates for medical treatment and are recognized as genuine mental disorders, so what about the Internet? Internet addiction -defined as “excessive gaming, sexual pre-occupations, and email/text messaging” – is becoming so common that at least one psychiatrist says it merits inclusion in psychiatry’s official handbook of mental illness, the “Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders.”

Dr. Jerald Block of the Oregon Health and Science University is the latest voice pushing for this inclusion, noting that tech junkies display genuinely debilitating behavior, including drug-like cravings, withdrawal, and a constant need for more and better gear – just like a substance addict might exhibit.”

Question by mulroy1563: Addictions – alcoholism vs nicotine?
Is there availability of medical information that compares these & other ‘…isms’ in terms of the hardest one to overcome.

My hope is that understandable facts might be available for the reasoning that applies.

Best answer:

Answer by Coney
Hmm. I don’t know the answer to this one, but what you could do is post a new question asking addicts which one they think is harder, and you could get your own statistics from that by marking how many think each “ism” is harder to get rid of. If you want more factual information, I’d make sure that everyone knows you only want addicts to respond, because people who aren’t addicts can’t give reliable answers on this subject.
Hope this helps.

Question by john_morlock2001: Are there low costs or no costs long term residential treatment centers for drug and alcohol addictions?
Friends of mine have an adult child who has already been through short term drug and alcohol rehab (2 weeks to 30 days) treatments, only to relapse. He needs longer term treatment to address the psychological problems associated with addiction; but like millions of other Americans he has no insurance.

Is anyone aware of any long term treatment centers that may help him?

Best answer:

Answer by 2manydogs
Yes, there are but there is no national program that sponsors them.

Get the parents to Al-Anon. They will meet parents and other family members with the same problem and can find the low cost alternatives in your area.

If that doesn’t work, go to an open AA meeting and ask for help from a sober alcoholic.

Question by Guy: i saw this man promoting a book that promises a cure for alcoholism and addictions!?
it sells for 40 bucks! do you really think that a person struggliong with a drinking or drug problem for years can be cured by reading one book?? is this dr a scam artist, like many others/ and why is public so stupid as to buy into the lies of these frauds, making them filthy rich? like tv preachers and others selling information ON CDS AND DVDS?why do you people buy into the lies?

Best answer:

Answer by legatus primus
for one, people buy into the lies of tv preachers, tv salesman, and advertisements because they are impulsive and can not distinguish between necessity and wants. as far the book proposing a cure for alcoholism and addictions, i highly doubt that it would be a cure. it is more likely that it would offer suggestions to the reader influencing them to empower themselves. the book itself IS NOT A CURE. it might just offer help, but if you are willing to help yourself, the book might help in guiding you. however, it is not a guarantee.
