Question by me: symptoms of an alcoholic?
I can stop when I need to but I like to drink and I don’t like to stop until maybe 5-6 drinks? I am 22 and I am not sure if I am in the wrong crowd or if I could have a problem? What are the symptoms of an alcoholic?

There’s a little test here to see if you have a problem … http://www.aa-uk.org.uk/publications/areyou.htm
You say you can stop when you need to, but you can’t be sure of that unless you actually do try stopping. A lot of people think they could stop whenever they wanted but don’t realise that they actually couldn’t. If you find yourself needing alcohol then it could be a problem. You mightn’t necessarily be an alcoholic (in the way that we’d usually think of an alcoholic) but you could have a slight problem that, if you didn’t face up to, might become alcoholism in the future.
Just keep an eye on your drinking habits, even keep a little record of them, and try to work out why you drink – do you do it to fit in, do you do it to escape from problems, do you do it because you don’t think you’ll have a good time without it … etc.
Good luck.

Question by astutewoman: Alcoholism / Alcoholic behavior…?
I have limited exposure to alcoholism from various stages and people in my life…and currently involved with a recovering alcoholic… I try to support others going through the same thing… and had a friend say this to me recently —

“One thing I’m coming to grips with right now is that, regardless of what he says, alcohol is his #1 love, not me. He will beg, borrow, steal and lie to get it – and I couldn’t say for sure if he’d go to those lengths for me! Should we be sympathetic to the fact that this addiction and disease
is making them lie and hurt us? Somedays I feel there is a fine line between being supportive and being a total pushover.”

Has anyone felt this same way? have you felt you were being supportive and a pushover or did you feel you were being one more than the other.. and how?

How did you cope with what you felt versus knowing what you had to do?

Addicts CAN stop…. Don’t let them manipulate you. Give them help to stop, but don’t enable their addiction.

Question by nilleh: How do I deal with my alcoholic mother?
My mother has severe alcoholism. she drink from literally from the time she wake up, until she goes to sleep. She literally drinks from 5 in the morning, to 10 at night. I have tried relentlessly to get her help, to no avail.

I am having a lot of trouble accepting the fact that she might not ever get better, and may very well die from this.
I don’t want to join a group or anything. I don’t think I can take talking face to face with people about my problems.
What do I do?

Question by william m: How to help a alcoholic?
I need help !! How can I get inpatient treatment for alcoholism with out having health insurance? I am so sick of drinking that i’d commit a misdemeanor just to get locked up for a few days as long as it’s not anything real bad. Anyone known anybody that might have went thru some thing similar? Any help in this matter i’d be very thankful!! I got bad anexity problems, so going to AA meetings are almost out of the question.

You definitely need the right mind set on wanting to stop drinking..”and it seems as though you maybe there”

Try going to an Addiction Psychiatry Doctor, he will then tell you whether or not you need the Inpatient treatment, and if so..he can guide you to some of the ways for people without insurance..ie..sliding fee scales or low income..

I personally went through the above, and decided i wanted to try the pills on my own at home..He put me on Campral & Naltrexone, and it worked for me. He also gave me Librium for the first 3-4 days if I needed it, going through the withdrawels..never used them! He did want me to go to AA, but like yourself I too had anexity, and didnt go..

Its been 7 months since I quit, and I feel great! Alot of good came from it..I lost weight, got rid of my anexity, feel alot better about myself..

Good Luck in what you decide
