He will need both to actually overcome his anxiety. Medication is useless without counseling, and counseling is usually insufficient on its own.
He’s also developed a dependence on alcohol and that’s a slipper slope into addiction and abuse.
Tread lightly.
You can’t ‘’save” or ”fix” a person that isn’t ready to accept help for themselves. Instead of exhausting and endangering yourself, find a way to amicably leave the relationship and surround yourself with healthy and positive people. You’re going to burn out and feel resentment and guilt if you don’t.

Question by goldkiwi: Alcohol withdrawal and pre-existing anxiety?
I’m a 19 year old female. I’ve suffered from anxiety for the past two years now, never been on medication because I am strongly opposed to taking it. But for the past few months I’ve been drinking at least four beers a day, at least five times a week. And I haven’t drank for almost 48 hours and I am feeling irritable and anxious. I also am late on rent, got laid off, so those factors are also causing me to be anxious. And I am somewhat of a hypochondriac.

Was I drinking too much that I’d have to go to the hospital for my alcohol withdrawal? Or is this just my anxiety intensified and not significant alcohol withdrawal?

I’d rather deal with it myself than have my family worried and miss out on work and have crazy bills to pay and I also believe that anyone can overcome anything, it’s just all in the mind. Which is why I really hope I don’t need medical treatment.

No, absolutely not. I know people who drink more than you. Honestly, I’ve drank as much as you before. Your level of consumption doesn’t rise to the level to evoke serious concern. Your psychological dependency is the kicker.

The only symptoms of alcohol withdrawal you should have is nervousness and anxiety. Not shakes, vomiting or any other physical manifestation.

If you have anxiety disorder, you should try to get xanax. Those can be habit forming as well, but you could at least break up taking those with drinking.

What do you think? Answer below!

Question by Dufman: How long does anxiety last once you stop drinking alcohol?
How long does irritability and anxiety last once you stop drinking alcohol.

I’ve been drinking lots of beer for 15 years and recently have been drinking almost daily this past year.

I noticed i get irritable and anxious when I’m not drinking.

What can i expect when I quit?
Finchy : Wow, you are good. I couldn’t ask for a better answer. Every thing you said makes sense.

THANKS.

If you are physically dependent on alcohol, the detox process usually lasts 3-5 days. This should really be done under medical supervision due to the medical risks… alcohol is one of the few substances where the withdrawal and detox can actually kill you. There will probably be heightened anxiety for those 3-5 days, but as someone who drinks daily, there is probably a lot you’ve been numbing emotionally for the past 15 years through drinking. So you are probably going to find that the anxiety will persist since you probably lack coping skills to deal with life stressors without turning to alcohol. I would suggest getting professional help.

Do they lower your seratonin levels? I only drink on the weekends but I usually drink too much about one weekend night per week. I have noticed anxiety symptoms to be getting worse. I thought I had it under control after extensive counseling but now it’s getting worse. I do not want to ever relive that experience. Could my bad habits be the problem? What should I do?
