Question by : If alcoholism is a disease, why don’t people just go to the doctor?
Wouldn’t it be easier to go to rehab and therapy instead of going to Alcoholics Anonymous? How can they expect to get better if A.A. says alcoholism is a lifelong disease? Why is it that alcoholism is called a disease but doing cocaine or other drugs isn’t? I understand they might be ashamed but they need to get over that if they want to get better.

You apparently don’t have a good understanding about alcoholism. It is an addictive disease, just like drug abuse/smoking/any other substances and is difficult, at best, to treat yourself. Most people do not have insurance that would cover rehab and therapy which can run tens of thousands of dollars. Many have gone to their doctor for help with this initially but, once they go back to drinking, they are embarrassed because they do not have enough “will power” to stop which is foolish. It takes support, medications and a physician to help anyone through this process. The support is what AA does. Without it, many go back to their old patterns. None of this is easy for anyone who has an addiction and failure rates are very high.

It can give you a disease, but no. It is an addiction. It depends on what the conditions are and it can control people.

Question by Original: When will people realize that alcoholism is NOT a disease?
Humans have free will. Free will means that you have a CHOICE to continue drinking or not to drink. It’s not a disease, its just a lack of personal responsibility.
Bottom Line: If someone commits a crime, let’s say a DUI, and we put them in jail then guess what, they won’t have access to alcohol so what happens to those people? They don’t depend on alcohol so how do they “cope”?

Ah…I see – sort of like being a troll is a personal choice, too.
