Question by ricker4087: Workplace discrimination. My employer made me leave a inpatient drug and alcohol early to get back to work?
My workplace denied me an inpatient aftercare drug and alcohol treatment program and now i might lose my job because i failed another drug test. All they had to do is give me a 1st shift position for 90 days and then i could go to work everyday. they told me no and made me leave my inpatient program before i was completly rehabilitated. I think that is pretty discriminating because i have a disease and they wouldnt work with me and basically said your life isnt important to us we need you to work on second shift now. Now they’re threatening my job because i didnt quit everything on my own. What if i had cancer and they said i dont need to go to chemotherapy i just need to get back to work because your job is more important than your life… Does anyone know if i have a lawsuit against them because my life is messed up forever now. Tomorrow morning they are deciding to either fire me or not. I want to better my life but my employer wont allow me to and now they want to fire me. HELP ME!

This is not the place to get help. You need a real lawyer and you need that lawyer YESTERDAY. Don’t pi$ $ around here hoping for advice. Too many state laws can come into play and you don’t mention which state you live in. Go see a lawyer now. That person can advise you as to what you can and cannot do.

Question by CKApple: What are the early signs of alcohol addiction / dependence?
I’ve been drinking more lately as stress and pain in my life has increased. I’ve never touched narcotics, but I know I am looking to alcohol pretty often lately as a feeble means off escape from reality. The other day I found myself heavily drinking alone. I don’t think I have a problem, but I know that if I did, I may not know it at first. I can stop anytime, right? That’s what they all say.
When giving your answer, please let me know if you have a drinking problem or describe your relationship with someone who has.

You need to think if your alcohol use is interfering with your life, relationships, happiness, work. I know I had a problem when I was getting drunk alone at home a lot. Do you depend on alcohol to get you through things? “I can stop at anytime” means nothing unless you actually do stop instead of trying to convince yourself/others you CAN quit.

Question by sjp77: How do you get an alcoholic that is suspected of being in the early stages of alcoholic dementia to see a dr.?
My mother has been an alcoholic for over 10 years. After much pleading from the family, she decided to stop drinking and start attending AA meetings. There is a noticeable difference in her general character, and has seemingly become more and more illiterate especially over the past year. We have asked her to please go to the doctor, but refuses saying there’s nothing wrong with her. How can we get her to see that we are only trying to help her by going to see the doctor?

Your mother is suffering from Korsakoff syndrome, which is brain damage caused by years of heavy drinking. Alcohol prevents the body from utilizing thiamine (vitamin b-1) properly. This leads to neuron death. This shows up behaviorally as impaired judgment, impaired memory, and a host of other problems.
One of the first symptoms of alcoholism is denial. “I only drink beer”, “I only drink at night”, “I can stop anytime I want to”. The excuses go on and on. The same psychology which causes this denial is continuing with your mother now. “There’s nothing wrong with me”. The psychology of denial plus the impaired judgment lead your mother to think that she’s fine.
You’re probably not going to be able to convince your mother to go to a doctor on her own. I know that this is not what you want to hear.
I’ve put a link to korsakoff-syndrome below to better help you understand what is happening to your mother.

Question by lol: Are there early signs to alcoholism?
College is just around the corner, and I’m starting to wonder if I want to start drinking socially. I have never gotten drunk, and never really drank alcohol. I have only sampled it a few times.
My father is a heavy drinker but only gets really drunk around others. My mother was an alcoholic and is in recovery. I’m afraid to try drinking because I do not want to become an alcoholic. Are there any signs in other behavior that hint to alcoholism?

If you start to desire alcohol everytime you see it, and find it very difficult to go for a week without alcohol as i do…you are probably on your way to becoming an alcoholic like me, i’m 15 :]
If not, you’re fine
