In Aug 2010 my husband was given custody of his son from his previous marriage because his ex wife had been deemed unfit by CPS in Arizona where she lives. She had threatened to kill the child on several occasions, had attempted suicide with him in the house, had been seen driving with him under the influence of alcohol and drugs and he was not seat-belted in the car or in his child seat (he was 3). We lived in South Carolina at the time and when my husband flew out to pick my stepson up CPS had arranged for her to come and say goodbye. She instead checked herself into the hospital and then refused to give us any of his clothes or anything of is saying she would only give it to us if my husband postponed his flight. Since we had no money and my husband is a Marine we had to get a loan from Navy Relief for the plane tickets so there was no way to postpone the flights so my stepson came to us Literally with the clothes on his back and nothing else. After he got here we tried to expedite phone calls between him and his mother but she would cry hysterically and tell him that we didn’t love him and that’s why we took him from her. She demanded that my husband talk to her every time she called and he told her he would call her for my stepson but he didn’t have anything else to say to her because he was angry at her for the situation that she had put their son in. After seeing the affect her hysterics had on my stepson( he thought he had done something wrong that made her cry and felt really guilty) we told her that until she could control herself and her behavior and stop trying to alienate him from us we would not facilitate any more phone calls between her and my stepson. She then began threatening to kill us. We had to get an order of protection which says she is not to contact us in anyway and she isn’t allowed contact with stepson either. She violated the order 5 days after being served and violated it again last night. She suffers from borderline personality disorder and one of her family members told us she has been committed 3 times on a 5150. We spoke with a Legal secretary who told us that with her history of drug and alcohol abuse and the fact that she is still abusing alcohol and drugs even though that’s a large part of why CPS took her son away, and her history of Violence ( she has an extensive arrest record) and the mental illness is all enough for my husband to ask for her parental rights to be terminated in the best interest of my stepson. The problem is we are a one income family and cannot afford a lawyer. We are desperate to keep my stepson safe. He was horribly abused when he was with her (she beat him with a belt all over his body because he said I was nice when she had told him to tell her grandma that I hit him because he wouldn’t say it, and he was locked in a room for 24 hours with her mother’s corpse and no food because she wanted to go to a party and didn’t feel like calling the coroner among other things) and we know that it is in his best interest to not be around her insanity any longer than he already has. He was so damaged when he came to us and has finally started getting to a place where he feels free to talk about what he endured and where he feels safe and we want to make sure he has a happy stable life with parents who give him all the love he deserve. PLEASE PLEASE WE NEED HELP- even if we cant find a pro- bono Lawyer We can make payments we just cant pay $ 25,000 all at once. can someone PLEASE help us find someone who can help us. We now live in California in San Diego County. ANY Advice is GREATLY appreciated.
Pressed Rat Yes I do Know how hard it is to pay of student loans. MY Brother went to law school but he is not a practicing lawyer nor could he practice in this state- otherwise id ask him! I didn’t CHOSE to be a one income family I had no choice when I lost my job and was diagnosed with Lupus. I am looking for a job but right now I stay home with my stepson. You don’t have to be rude and if you had nothing helpful to add you could have just moved on. Im not judging you so please don’t judge me.
s- as i said we are willing to pay- we just cant afford large sums like $ 5000 all at once. We live pay check to paycheck and his ex refuses to pay child support, not to mention the fact that we lost the $ 700 that I paid from my tax return for tickets for my husband to go pick up his son for his visitation that we had purchased before we got called by CPS to come get him ( he had a visit coming up that next month and we couldn’t get a refund.) We CAN make payments but we don’t even take in $ 5000

Usually the Free Lawyers place their offices near the Free Grocery Stores and the Free Car Stores. Just look for the planet where you don’t have to pay for anything.
You choose to be a “One Income Family.” I choose not to be a “No Income Lawyer.” Do you realize how hard it is to pay off student loans?
