Question by Jo: how long does it take to detox a 189lbs man from alcohol?
If he had consummed 26 ounces of liquer, how many hours does it take so there would be no alcohol in him anymore?

Best answer:

Answer by Gregory W
From my understanding, the body disposes of one ounce of liquor in one hour. The liver is what cleanses the body from the alcohol, so therefore I don’t believe that it matters how much a man weighs when it comes to ridding the body of the alcohol. When asking about liquor – it would depend upon what alcohol proof the liquor was.
If the 26 ounces of liquor was pure alcohol, then by theory it would take about 26 hours to get rid of the alcohol. If this was a once in a while binge, then I would probably say that this man would be drunk the next morning and he would be wise not to go to work. From personal experience, I would say that it would take a good three days to recover from this kind of binge. That is, to go to work feeling 100%
A habitual drinker though, I believe that the detox process can take as many as 14 days.
In conclusion, the detox period depends upon how much of a habitual drinker this person is.

Question by : Is a hangover actually a withdrawal from alcohol?
It is very true that a shot, or a beer can help a hangover the morning after a night of excessive alcohol consumption. Seems to me like the reason for this is, if it wasn’t a (although mild) withdrawal it wouldn’t be relieving. Feedback?

Best answer:

Answer by Dorque
The causes of a hangover are not entirely known. That is considered to potentially be a part of it. However, I personally disagree with that because it is very unusual for the human body to become so powerfully addicted to something so fast, and withdrawal usually requires the body to be used to a substance.

I normally trust that a hangover is a combination of the effects of dehydration (drinking alcohol dehydrates you, and you WILL suffer worse if you do not drink several glasses of water before sleeping after a night on the town) and the fact that you have just been ingesting poison (yes, alcohol is technically a poison.) The reason that having another drink is relieving is that alcohol tends to dull the pain centers of the brain. You may have noticed that banging into walls or falling on your face hurt less when you’re drunk. Alcohol is a nerve depressant.

Question by brutus: What is the best way to go cold turkey from my alcohol addiction?
I am trying to dry out. I should not be drinking really at all cause i have other health problems. I was going to buy a bottle of lucozade tommorrow to help me. I have a large bottle of cold water in my fridge and will sip on that some. – any tips

Answer by meanK
First of all, I would like to say that it’s great that you are trying to kick the habit.

Try AA, at least you will have some support.

And another thing, don’t buy alcohol and don’t go to places where you will be tempted to by alcohol.

Good luck and I know people who have done the same thing as you so it’s totally possible!
