Question by NJ_Irishman: I have alcoholism. It’s a brain disease I inherited from a long line of Irish drunks. Why do some deny this?
They did a brainscan on me, it was off the charts. ALCOHOLISM all the way.
Why do some idiots deny the ovious fact that ALCOHOLISM is a BRAIN DISEASE that you INHERIT from your family? I’m Irish, I know I inhereted this BRAIN DISEASE from a lone line of drunks on the Emrald Isle. How is alcoholism any different from cancer, or tuburculosis, or AIDS???

alcoholism is a BEHAVIOR disorder. and a physcial and mental addiction. Yes it is a disease but ultimately it is a choice. you can CHOOSE not to drink alcohol. cancer is not a choice.

Question by SevasTra: Can alcoholism be inherited even if you don’t drink?
My dad is a severe alcoholic. It eventually got so bad that he abandoned my family just so he could drink. I have been drunk once in my life, and since learning that alcoholism can be inherited, I haven’t touched alcohol. But lately, all I want to do is get really wasted. I think about it often and I’ve almost gone through with it twice. Since I haven’t touched alcohol in over two years, I’m pretty sure that I didn’t start an addiction to it on my own. So, can alcoholism still be inherited if you don’t drink?

Question by enigme_zagadka: Why is it okay to be predisposed toward “being gay”, but people try to cure inherited alcoholism or violence?
The argument is either “God made me this way” or “My DNA made me this way.” How can it be okay to be genetically predisposed toward same-sex attraction, but not okay to let your genes dictate what actions you take in other spheres of your life?

a short list of heritable traits and how (some people say) society accepts them:
gay – okay?
alcoholism – not okay?
violence – not okay?
gambling addiction – not okay?

Are the tendencies toward heritable but not desired traits any less “natural” than whatever might genetically incline a person to “be gay?”

Best answer:

All four of these things are not genetics. They are sin, and therefore not okay. This ‘I was born that way’ argument is new. and a lie from the pit of hell.
