Question by abigayle la: Can smoking lead one to become an alcohol dependent and lead to the necessity of addiction treatment?
A lot of smokers I know are also alcohol drinkers. Are smoking and alcohol drinking somehow connected? Will the treatment of one eventually lead to the dissipating of the other?
Best answer:
Answer by ashlie dh
Actually, smoking and alcohol consumption are indeed interrelated. Nicotine intake increases a person’s alcohol craving, whereas alcohol drinking boosts the effects of smoking. This explains why smokers are almost always drinkers as well. Addiction treatment will be needed when the person is already consuming so much more of the substances than what is moderate, or when he is getting physically or psychologically dependent upon them. Treatment of both disorders will be best as treating only one will bode for a bigger chance of relapse.

Smoking and alcohol consumption actually happens to be interrelated. Nicotine increases alcohol cravings and alcohol boosts smoking effects. This is why smokers are usually drinkers too. If the person is really dependent upon smoking and alcohol, it’s always best to get addiction treatment. Treating both smoking and alcohol addiction simultaneously would be the best way to go, as treating only one first might only lead to relapse soon after.

Question by mouthbreather77: Does the culture of sports and Hollywood lead to alcoholism?
Best answer:
Answer by Elizabeth
I think the kind of people that are driven may be the kind of people that are predisposed to living “large”. I don’t think the jobs cause the alcoholism. Cops, I think, drink because of their jobs though.

It has come to my attention that a lot of smokers I know also happen to be heavy drinkers. I was just wondering whether the two habits are really connected. Will undergoing treatment for alcohol abuse also get rid of the person’s smoking habit?
