Question by neverbroken83: Signs of alcoholism. . . Maybe?
My hubby drinks every night, but it’s not always the same; here’s what I mean: Some nights he won’t drink till almost 10pm and all he has is a couple of 24 oz Icehouses, then other nights he’s drinking before 6pm and by the time he goes to sleep he’s polished off a 5th plus a couple of beers. He also says that he does not need to drink, he does it because he can’t sleep unless he catches a buzz. He’s not lying either, if he tries not to drink he’ll stay up all night cause he can’t sleep then I just tell him to get a few drinks so he can get some rest for the next day. Are these signs of alcoholism? I really don’t know, I’m not much of a drinker, last time I did was back in August, it just doesn’t interest me very much. What would you consider this? Thanks!
I forgot to mention earlier, that I am also concerned because usually about 2 times a week he’ll stop for lunch at the bar and have a few drinks. I’m worried because he works in construction around a lot of power saws and things of that sort, and I know alcohol can inhibit reaction times. He’ll maybe have 2-3 beers during lunch, go back to work then have some more once he’s at home for the evening. I partially acredit it to the fact he was raised in a home where drinking was a very normal thing, so to him it’s just as typical as getting a shower or checking the mail.

Question by Hannah: Are these signs of alcoholism?
I have seriously low self esteem… If i need to go out somewhere like to town for example, on my own, then i will have a few drinks before i go (even if its in the day time). This is because i dont feel confident going anywhere on my own, so alcohol makes me feel more confident because im less self concious of my surroundings. Should i be wrorried?

It may not be a sign of alcoholism, but it is a sign you need some help.
You may have a drinking problem if you…

Can never stick to “just one” drink.
Feel guilty or ashamed about your drinking.
Lie to others or hide your drinking habits.
Have friends or family members who are worried about your drinking.
Need to drink in order to relax or feel better.
“Black out” or forget what you did while you were drinking.
Regularly drink more than you intended to.

Question by ♥Gorgeous George♥: If you took a test and someone said you had 4 out of 16 signs of alcoholism would you quit drinking?
It was a test in a magazine

Best answer:

Answer by The Alternative Mr Boombastic
Nope – wouldn’t even if I got 16 out of 16. Not because I condone drinking, but the test has surely got to be whether you have any physical signs of illness, e.g. yellowing, headaches, feeling lathargic etc. If ya do, see a doctor, and take it from there. Those tests are only there to make you think, not to diagnose.

Question by CKApple: What are the early signs of alcohol addiction / dependence?
I’ve been drinking more lately as stress and pain in my life has increased. I’ve never touched narcotics, but I know I am looking to alcohol pretty often lately as a feeble means off escape from reality. The other day I found myself heavily drinking alone. I don’t think I have a problem, but I know that if I did, I may not know it at first. I can stop anytime, right? That’s what they all say.

When giving your answer, please let me know if you have a drinking problem or describe your relationship with someone who has.

You need to think if your alcohol use is interfering with your life, relationships, happiness, work. I know I had a problem when I was getting drunk alone at home a lot. Do you depend on alcohol to get you through things? “I can stop at anytime” means nothing unless you actually do stop instead of trying to convince yourself/others you CAN quit.
