Mental illness and alcohol are factors; also last contact included some violence. Children are not allowed by father to discuss it openly, except to demonize mother. Counseling currently not an option. Looking for an age appropriate book, perhaps, that deals with loss – specifically loss by choice. A parent resource would be good also. I am aunt of children; concerned about possible feelings of misplaced guilt, anger, loneliness, love.

thur nite my little sister snuck out in the middle of the night fri AM we got a call from the police (shes only 14) apparently they found her passed out in a park, they drug tested her and it was positive for marijuana. weve never had any kind of problem like this from her she doesnt have a record shes an honor student an overall decent kid. on top of that she stole a bottle of wine from r house. the police didnt press any charges and she admitted the wine was stolen and that she had snuck out with some friends. the thing is the police called social services who r making her go to drug and alcohol counseling (which im not saying is bad mayb itll scare her into making this an isolated incident). but we have heard horror stories about social services. is this the type of case that stays open until the child is 18? will she b placed in a foster home or detention center? what should we expect?
