Question by : Can you be in different stages of recovery based on different drugs used?
If you stop drinking alcohol, but continue to smoke marijuana; can you be considered to be in the action stage in terms of your recovery from alcohol, but only in the pre-contemplation stage in terms of your recovery with your drug (marijuana) use?

Answer by namairb2
Very deep question. The problem is that since alcohol is legal the records and statistics are all based on facts. With weed the opposite is true except within those states where it’s legal for medicinal use. The few outweigh the many and so does the answer. When smoking both together, common sense tells you that giving up the alcohol is going to be a driving board into the answer to the contemplation of giving up the weed too. There can’t be any answers, just guesses to this. Sense the addictive nicotine isn’t found in in it are we even certain that it is addictive? Good luck and God Bless

Question by sjp77: How do you get an alcoholic that is suspected of being in the early stages of alcoholic dementia to see a dr.?
My mother has been an alcoholic for over 10 years. After much pleading from the family, she decided to stop drinking and start attending AA meetings. There is a noticeable difference in her general character, and has seemingly become more and more illiterate especially over the past year. We have asked her to please go to the doctor, but refuses saying there’s nothing wrong with her. How can we get her to see that we are only trying to help her by going to see the doctor?

Answer by Sean Roberts
Your mother is suffering from Korsakoff syndrome, which is brain damage caused by years of heavy drinking. Alcohol prevents the body from utilizing thiamine (vitamin b-1) properly. This leads to neuron death. This shows up behaviorally as impaired judgment, impaired memory, and a host of other problems.

One of the first symptoms of alcoholism is denial. “I only drink beer”, “I only drink at night”, “I can stop anytime I want to”. The excuses go on and on. The same psychology which causes this denial is continuing with your mother now. “There’s nothing wrong with me”. The psychology of denial plus the impaired judgment lead your mother to think that she’s fine.

You’re probably not going to be able to convince your mother to go to a doctor on her own. I know that this is not what you want to hear.

I’ve put a link to korsakoff-syndrome below to better help you understand what is happening to your mother.

Question by Catia. S: beginning stages of alcoholism?
i notice that sometimes when i drink in social situations i am highly likely to drink past my responsible limit, explode at people, etc. it affects my memory and i do a lot of things that are out of character for me and don’t remember anything about them. i start angry fights with my boyfriend.

alcoholism runs in my family so i am basically wondering, is alcoholism more than just drinking a lot/often? is it also being unable to control how much you drink, and being unable to control yourself ?

Answer by George
Yes, you are right. If I were you I wouldn’t drink anymore. I know it’s not easy, but it’s a long way down on a very slippery slope. Just order a coke the next time you go out :)
