people view suicide and acohol as a way to escape the reality of their problems, depression is the driving force behind suicide, with alcoholism, because depression can span for years without proper treatment, alcoholics become dependent on the high that it gives them, the escape, the temporary happiness or delirium on a longterm basis, until they can face their triggers and problems

Question by : Why is it that police officers have the highest rate of alcoholism, spousal abuse, suicide, and divorce?
I am considering pursuing a career in law enforcement but after having done a little bit of research and talking to a couple of police officers it seems that law enforcement personnel are plagued with alcoholism, spousal abuse, suicide, and divorce. Supposedly their rates for these four categories are higher than the national average. What can explain for these trends and how stressful and fun is a career in law enforcement.. (I would preferably like responses from current or former police officers but anyone is welcome to answer. Please state whether you are involved in law enforcement)

I have not seen a single statistic to support your claims of alcoholism and abuse. If you have one, please post it.

I have seen a statistic on divorce that puts police at 60%. This may seem high, but the average for the entire US is 55%, so it is only slightly higher. You can probably account the extra 5% simply to working holidays, weekends, and lots of overtime.

Suicide has always been high in the police profession due to the stress, long hours, shift work, high expectations, and the fact they see the worst of society on a daily basis.

My brother is suicidal and has severe alcoholism. He has attempted suicide several times. How do I help him?

The family wants to do an intervention, but his self esteem is so minimal that we fear it will reinforce his negative view of himself and instead of accepting the help, he will leave and commit suicide. Also, we would like to place him in an inpatient rehab facility. Does anyone know of an affordable facility?

Six month’s ago, My daughter’s best friend’s fiance killed himself 2 months before their wedding. Her close friend overdosed with alcohol and pain killers three months ago and now her other friend’s brother killed himself tonight. I’m so concerned for her. She went to counseling with her best friend when the fiance killed himself and said it just made things worse. Any suggestions? I’m so scared with the pain she is enduring and the pain she endures for her friends She was just getting over the friend who overdosed and now this.
