Question by dayanara ts: What are the risks of being an alcoholic and not undergoing alcohol rehabilitation?
I happen to know a lot of teens in our neighborhood who are already alcoholic and seem to have no plans of going to an alcohol rehab. I don’t think they understand the risks of drinking alcohol. I’m close to some of them, and I want to enlighten them about this.

There are lots of risks that go with alcohol addiction. These are just some of them:

* Death or injuries because of alcohol-related motor vehicle crashes.
* Death or injuries because of alcohol-related suicide and homicide.
* They are more prone to engaging in sexual activities and have unprotected sex than teens who don’t drink. This puts them at a higher risk for getting HIV, AIDS, and other sexually-transmitted diseases.
* They are also more likely to be victims of violent crimes like assault, robbery, and rape.
* Those who drink are more likely to have problems regarding their conduct and school work.
* This could lead to having dual diagnosis.
* Teens who drink are more likely to develop alcohol dependence.

Question by brittani LS: What would be a good reason for an individual to refuse undergoing an alcohol treatment program?
I’m doing a story for my creative writing class, and my main character is a girl whose dad doesn’t want to stop drinking alcohol. I was just wondering what would be a good reason for his refusal. I was also wondering how the girl would convince her dad to go and get himself treated. Any ideas?

I think the most obvious reasons for refusal is denial, shame, and unwillingness to change. You could start the story by showing the father’s resistance to positive change, and then throw in a traumatic experience/catharsis that forces him into rehab. It’s so sadly cliche but true, that it sometimes takes life-changing or near-death experiences to force idiots to take action.

Question by catherine_ann: Will undergoing alcoholism treatment mean that I won’t be allowed to drink alcohol ever again?

The goal of alcoholism treatments is to help the person go into abstinence. It’s advisable that you don’t consume any alcoholic drinks in a long span of time. This doesn’t mean that you can’t drink alcohol ever again, just that when you do so, you’ll be sure to do it in moderation. Excessive drinking will have you addicted again in no time, and you don’t want that. If you really want to be sober, work on it. It’s always a wonderful feeling when you’re experiencing bliss without alcohol messing with your brain.

Question by arlyn r: One of my relatives is undergoing alcoholism treatment. What are the signs that a person has alcoholism?
I have a friend who drinks alcohol, and yet it doesn’t seem like a problem for him. I just want to know what it is that the person must embody before he is considered as an alcoholic.

Best answer:

Answer by adriana p
Your friend is probably not an alcoholic because he drinks moderately. Moderate drinking of alcohol is fine.
Alcoholism is characterized by the following:

tolerance- the person needs to drink more alcohol in order for him to get high
craving- the compulsion to drink
loss of control- the person cannot seem to stop drinking once he has begun
physical dependence- withdrawal symptoms already occur when the person stops drinking or drinks in lesser doses.
